Folly View is an ideal base from which to explore the Shropshire Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  The Shropshire Way passes just 1/2 mile from your front door.  There are places of interest within a short walk of Folly View.  Stokesay Castle & Church, The Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre and “The Land of Lost Content” a collection dedicated to British Popular Culture.  For younger visitors there is Mickey Millers Play Barn.

 

 

    Walking

 

 

     
  This is a fantastic area for those who enjoy walkingThe Shropshire Way is easily accessible and can be explored in four directions from Craven Arms.  There are many circular walks that can be started from Folly View including the Hills & Dales Hike and The Three Woods Walk.  Travelling a few miles west gives the opportunity to hike part of the Offa's Dyke Trail, or travel north and walk over the Long Mynd.  Church Stretton and Bishop's Castle host walking festivals in early June. 
             
   Cycling          
  Whether it’s cycling along quiet country lanes or mountain biking through forests, you’ll find it all in the Shropshire Hills. There are many circular routes which start from our local market towns, or develop your own.  For more information visit www.shropshirecycling.co.uk.  Hopton Wood has family trails & for those wanting more of a challenge there is a route which is used for competitions.     Wildlife          
  Shropshire is a beautiful county with a marvellously diverse landscape, and is fortunate enough to have a high number of nature reserves and wildlife sites.   The Red Kite now has a strong foothold in south Shropshire and be regularly seen in the area around Craven Arms.   You can find more details of where to watch birds and other wildlife from Shropshire Wildlife Trust and Shropshire Ornithological Trust.
       

    Places to visit

         
  There are many historic houses, castles and churches within easy reach of Folly View.  The beautiful Stokesay Castle and Church are just a short walk away.  The beautifully preserved Ludlow Castle is only 8 miles away.  The National Trust's Attingham Park, Powis Castle, The Dudmaston Estate, Sunnycroft, Croft Castle, and Berrington Hall are all within a 45 minute drive of Folly View.  The remains of the roman city of Wroxeter is just 5 miles east of nearby Shrewsbury.
   
  There are many other places in the area that are well worth visiting.  Below is a list of just a few of them.
   
 

The Ironbridge Gorge Museums. The world's first iron bridge (oddly beautiful) spanning the River Severn. Birth place of the industrial revolution, Ironbridge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Ironbridge Gorge Museums are nine award winning museums and sites that tell this momentous story.

The Severn Valley Railway. Britain's premier steam railway, 16 miles of glorious countryside and restored stations.  Shropshire has many other steam train attractions besides.

The Royal Airforce Museum Cosford. Aviation history brought to life, the largest collection of missiles in the country. Exciting displays of civil and military planes…Last of the few.

Weston Park. Ancestral home of the Earls of Bradford. Lots of events, concerts and the occasional world summit too.

Hawkstone Historic Park and Follies. Wooded magical land of grottoes, caves, cliffs and follies. Setting for the TV Chronicles of Narnia. Awesome.

Wroxeter Roman Vineyard. One of the world's most northerly vineyards producing red, white and sparkling wines.

  Shropshire may be far for the hurly-burly of London, but there's still plenty to keep you stimulated and entertained.   

   - English Haydn Festival in Bridgnorth

   - The world famous Shrewsbury Folk Festival

   - Attingham Park holds a wide range outdoor events including classical and  rock concerts

   - Ludlow Food Festival

   - Beer festivals in Bishop's Castle and Clun

   - Tales from the Edge - international story-telling festival in Much Wenlock

    Where to eat          
  For those on a budget, Craven Arms has several cafes that serve inexpensive wholesome food.  There are also two fish and chip shops and Chinese and Indian takeaways.   The Craven Arms Hotel  and Stokesay Castle Hotel both serve lunch and evening meals.  There are many more places in local villages & towns to eat, but too numerous to mention them all.

Just 8 miles away, the beautiful Georgian town of Ludlow is a gourmet's paradise, boasting four Michelin-rated restaurants (the highest number outside London) and numerous other delicious eateries.

There is a supermarket, Spar (late opening), newsagent, bakers, chemist, butchers, launderette  and a library, all in easy walking distance of Folly View.
